Brief

INST154 has an immensely rich set of instructional resources created by Doug Oard. When Dennis taught it in Spring 2022, he tested three novel instructional experiences: 1) use of low-fidelity prototyping craft-type design thinking materials to investigate questions of scale, aero and astro dynamics, and navigation; 2) the application of the idea of distributed cognition in role-playing Mission Control in class (different tables are different Mission control posts, with instructor as Lead Flight Director; and 3) incorporating more links to current science and space issues. Also of interest is a asymmetric VR-inspired one table/group must give instructions that another table/group role play.

Progress

Doug will teach the course in Fall of 2022 with his innovations. Dennis and Doug hope to document these innovations in “how to teach the course sustainably” materials.
